width=Retiree health insurance plans have been cut back by many private employers due to their escalating cost. The same is true for many public pension programs. Such cutbacks leave many people vulnerable as they approach a stage of life when they have higher medical costs.

Out-of-pocket health care expenditures have been estimated to take up to a third of retiree income.

A single payer system would end this by covering everyone regardless of their age, income, or employment status.
