To the Editor:
This is an open letter to Governor Phil Scott and the staff member who replied to my statement objecting to the closing the Birthing Center at Brattleboro Hospital. I was appalled by the reply I received, which began with a justification for closing this essential healthcare service because of financial solvency and sustainability. Further, the reply claimed that the Birthing Center is no longer meeting standards due to the number of anticipated deliveries this year estimated to be 220. They also claimed that no laboring woman would have to travel no more than 60 minutes to find another facility. Then they suggested that they could also go to the Emergency Room!
Here is my response to their insane reply.
“In the name of fiscal sustainability 220 pregnant women are thrown under the bus. Try driving 60 minutes in active labor, or delivering in an ER with labor and delivery staff unavailable if something goes wrong and expert intervention is vital.
“Your reply is totally inappropriate, worrying, and dangerous. It’s also mad and insulting to women who count on the excellent and humane care the Center offers. It insults the amazing midwives, nurses, and doulas who offer birthing women necessary support. Your stunning attitude and lack of commitment to quality healthcare is unacceptable. Thankfully Vermont women and those who love them will be sure our next governor has a brain and a compassionate heart.
“As a longtime doula at BMH I am disgusted by your reply.”
